A student research team from Xiamen University (XMU) visited Malaysia and Singapore from Aug 11 to 18 as part of the university's Tandem Program. The 32 participants, including undergraduates, master's, and doctoral students from 27 schools, conducted field research across five areas: culture, economy, energy, ecology, and engineering education.
The team visited the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore and the National Museum of Malaysia to explore Maritime Silk Road artifacts and the history of Asian cultural exchange. They also toured several Chinese community associations and memorial halls in Malacca and Singapore, learning about overseas Chinese communities' efforts to preserve their language and culture while maintaining ties with their ancestral homeland.
During the visit, students talked with their counterparts at the National University of Singapore about interdisciplinary research and industry-academia collaboration. They also observed mangrove conservation efforts at Kuala Selangor Nature Park, participated in discussions on financial governance at the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and visited floating solar projects as well as facilities operated by Huawei and BYD to learn about applications of Chinese technology in the region.
The student team also shared their research progress on qiaopi, the letters and remittances sent home by overseas Chinese, with community leaders and exchanged insights on river management and new energy development.
The program reflects XMU's commitment to international engagement and cross-cultural learning, supporting students in building bridges between China and the world.
