A delegation from the Fujian Institute for Sustainable Oceans (Xiamen University), or FISO, visited Indonesia from July 20 to 28 for a series of exchanges on marine cooperation with universities, government agencies, and industry representatives.
Led by Xue Xiongzhi, director of FISO and the Sustainable Coastal Development Capacity-Building Research Lab (SCD Lab), along with SCD Lab's Deputy Director Huang Jinliang and FISO's Office Director Lin Xiaoyan, the delegation visited Yogyakarta and Belitung.
In Yogyakarta, FISO and SCD Lab, together with Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), held a training session on marine spatial planning in the context of integrated coastal management. The delegation also conducted field research along the Yogyakarta coast to examine local approaches to balancing tourism, fishers' livelihoods, and coastal ecological restoration.

In Belitung, FISO and Indonesia's Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) held a joint seminar on marine spatial planning and cooperation. The discussions focused on marine spatial planning in Balikpapan Bay and a zero-carbon island initiative in the Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark, exploring renewable energy and coastal management solutions aimed at supporting sustainable development, climate resilience, and geological conservation.
FISO and MMAF have a long-standing partnership, highlighted by their cooperation on marine spatial planning in Balikpapan Bay, where Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara, is located.
