Xiamen University (XMU) hosted the 18th Marco Polo-ZHENG He Academy of International Oceans Law and Policy from June 29 to July 5, bringing together scholars and students from around the world to discuss emerging issues in international ocean law.
The weeklong program, organized by the university's School of Law, the South China Sea Institute, the Center for Oceans Law and the China Seas (XMU-COLCS), and the editorial office of China Oceans Law Review, was conducted entirely in English.
More than 30 students from universities in China and abroad, including the University of Hamburg, Leiden University, and XMU, attended the program.
Experts from Chinese and overseas universities shared insights into key issues in international ocean law. For example, Professor Alexander Proelss of the University of Hamburg discussed emerging issues in the law of the sea, including the impact of rising sea levels on maritime boundaries and rights allocation. Professor Maria Gavouneli of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens examined legal challenges surrounding artificial islands and installations.
Established as a signature program, the Marco Polo-ZHENG He Academy focuses on international ocean law and policy. The annual program brings together scholars and students from China and abroad to discuss major issues in ocean governance and international maritime law.
