XMU marks century of marine science excellence

A high-quality development conference, marking the 105th anniversary of marine sciences at Xiamen University (XMU) and the 80th anniversary of its Department of Oceanography, was held on April 6 at Xiang'an Campus.

Ranked among the top-tier academic programs in China, XMU's marine science discipline has established itself as an international benchmark for research in ocean biogeochemistry. Addressing the assembly, Zhang Rong, chairman of the University Council and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, noted that the discipline will continue to align its research objectives with national strategic needs while expanding its influence within the global scientific community.

Professor Peter Liss, chair of the Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) project and a fellow of the Royal Society, delivered a video address praising the university's State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science as a world-leading research center, highlighting its academic leadership in the field.

The ceremony presented special awards to prominent scholars Hong Huasheng, Jiao Nianzhi, and Dai Minhan for their significant contributions to the discipline's development. University leaders and faculty also inaugurated the Tang Shifeng Hall, named after the founder of the Department of Oceanography.
