The 2026 Xiamen University (XMU) Mathematics Culture Festival kicked off on March 14 at the Siming Campus. Guided by the vision of making mathematics visible, tangible, and enjoyable, the festival aims to enrich campus culture, spark students' curiosity, and strengthen foundational talent cultivation in the mathematical sciences.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Sun Li, vice chairman of University Council, emphasized that mathematics serves as the cornerstone of basic research and a key driver of technological self-reliance. He expressed hope that the festival would combine admissions outreach, talent development, and community engagement, allowing students to experience the wonder of mathematics firsthand while fostering scientific rigor and innovative thinking.

Zhou Xiangyu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, shared reflections from his own research journey, encouraging students to remain curious and committed to advancing fundamental mathematics.

Following the ceremony, an interactive math carnival featuring puzzles, games, and exhibits drew enthusiastic participation from students and faculty alike.

The month-long festival includes lectures, commemorative events honoring mathematician Chen Jingrun, open campus days, and school outreach programs. Through these initiatives, XMU seeks to deepen the connection between mathematical culture, academic development, and community service, contributing to the advancement of basic sciences and technological innovation.
