Experts and researchers gathered at Xiamen University's (XMU) Xiang'an Campus on Jan 23 for the 2025 Annual Academic Exchange Meeting of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Distinguished Research Group on Single-Atom Catalysis (SACs).

Professor Hu Wenping, president of XMU and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), said that scientific modernization is the core engine of Chinese modernization, with the depth of foundational research determining the extent of innovation. He noted that SACs, a revolutionary concept pioneered by Chinese scientists, demonstrates profound insight into catalysis and material sciences.

Project leader Zhang Tao, a CAS academician and a professor at the CAS' Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), presented a systematic report on the project's annual progress. Following the report, experts conducted discussions on future development. Their recommendations focused on deepening theoretical construction to clarify the dynamic nature of catalysts, strengthening applications in key reactions, and enhancing group collaboration through top-level design. They also advocated for interdisciplinary integration that leverages new technologies like AI and robotics to solve complex problems.

The research group, involving DICP, Tsinghua University, and XMU, attracts excellent young scholars to focus on the preparation, reaction systems, and industrial application of SACs. Through years of organized research, the project has produced a series of original achievements with significant international influence.
