The China-Malaysia Workshop in Palm Resource Utilization was held from Nov 25 to 26 at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM). The event brought together more than 30 experts and scholars from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, the University of Malaysia, IOI Group, and Xiamen ITG Group.

Participants discussed the current state of the palm oil industry and explored opportunities for China–Malaysia collaboration in production, research, development, and commercialization of related technologies.

Jiang Yunbao, dean of the China-Malaysia International Institute for Advanced Studies, said that Malaysia, as one of the world's largest palm oil producers, faces a critical challenge in managing and utilizing byproducts. He noted that Xiamen University (XMU) has a strong foundation in clean utilization of agricultural and forestry biomass, renewable energy, and green chemical industries, highlighting the strategic complementarity between the two institutions.

During keynote sessions, scholars presented their latest research on topics such as high-value palm oil derivatives, the application of palm oil biomass in renewable energy, and green extraction technologies for residue resource recovery.

In discussion sessions, participants probed technical bottlenecks in biomass collection and pre-processing, the impact of trade policies on global palm oil markets, mechanisms for joint China–Malaysia research funding, and strategies to better connect scientific results with industry needs.
