The University Presidents Roundtable between the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Macao was held in Hong Kong on Aug 12. During the roundtable, 15 universities and research institutions including Peking University, Xiamen University (XMU), the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Macao, jointly launched the Alliance of Open Life Science.

The alliance aims to advance the integration of scientific and industrial innovation in the field of life sciences, to establish a global innovation network, and to strengthen talent development. It seeks to contribute to human health and provide solutions to global challenges such as food security and extreme weather.

Several specialized committees will be set up to develop high-quality public products for the global life sciences community. Plans include the creation of a series of high-level journals in the field, adopting a main journal plus sub-journals model and exploring the use of blockchain and other technologies to establish an academic preprint publishing platform.

The alliance will also leverage the industrial, financial, and international cooperation strengths of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area to accelerate the establishment of a national regional technology transfer center, while exploring mechanisms for technology transfer and industrial incubation among the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao.
