Based on the life of Mr Tan Kah Kee and the historical efforts of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia who supported education in China, the dance drama blends modern choreography with elements of Minnan culture. This work depicts a century-long journey characterized by resilience and patriotism, crafting a collective portrait of the overseas Chinese community through dynamic scenes and expressive movement.
Audience members expressed that the dance drama not only preserves the century-old legacy of overseas Chinese but also serves as a bridge connecting the past and the future, passing on the spirit of patriotism. The drama reconstructs a complete and compelling story with a narrative built on episodic flashbacks. Rooted in Minnan culture, it vividly conveys the essence of Mr Tan Kah Kee, the overseas Chinese, and the Chinese people.
XMU alumnus Xiong Dong, who graduated in 1998 with a degree in economics, was among the key investors and producers of the drama. The production is scheduled to tour cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, with plans for international performances in the near future.
