The French scientific schooner Tara arrived in Xiamen on Oct 20 for a 10-day visit, bringing opportunities for scientific exchange and public engagement in marine conservation. The vessel opened to visitors on Oct 25, allowing students and members of the public to explore the floating laboratory.
Operated by the Tara Ocean Foundation, the vessel has conducted systematic scientific expeditions since 2003. It has completed 15 global expeditions, covering more than 500,000 kilometers in total, in collaboration with leading research institutions worldwide. Its research focuses on coral reef ecosystems, marine microbiomes, and the impacts of climate change.
The visit followed discussions between the foundation and Xiamen University (XMU). The two sides share research interests in marine ecosystems and conservation.
Public outreach was a major highlight of the visit. An exhibition featuring photos of the Tara was held at the Wutong Passenger Terminal, while students from primary and secondary schools and youth science groups were invited aboard to learn about marine research and speak with the crew.
A China-France symposium on frontier marine science was also held at Xiamen University's Xiang'an campus. Chinese and international scholars discussed marine ecosystems, climate change, and the use of artificial intelligence in marine research.
The Tara previously visited Xiamen in April 2018, when it joined XMU's research vessel Tan Kah Kee in a public open-ship event.
