Scholars from China and overseas gathered on Oct 2 at Xiamen University's Xiang'an Campus for the Forum on International Chinese Language Education and Cross-Civilizational Dialogue.
The forum launched a series of activities marking 70 years of international Chinese language education at Xiamen University (XMU). Experts from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Malta, the United States, and China exchanged ideas on language connectivity and cross‑civilizational dialogue.
The forum featured two thematic keynote sessions and a roundtable. Keynote speakers delivered research on cross‑cultural collaboration, the contemporary relevance of learning Chinese, overseas Chinese teaching, and the international spread of Chinese stories, combining theoretical analysis with practical solutions for global Chinese education.
Moderated by Professor Yi Zhongtian, the roundtable brought together sinologists and Chinese academics to discuss global Chinese teaching, the global spread of Chinese characters, learning obstacles, and handwriting challenges in the digital era. Participants noted that Chinese characters embody distinctive elements of Chinese civilization.
Zhong Yinghua, president of the World Chinese Language Teaching Society, praised XMU's seven decades of commitment to international Chinese education at the closing session. "International Chinese education now has strong opportunities for development, and XMU has shown remarkable responsibility over the past 70 years," he said. XMU will host follow‑up academic and cultural events to promote global people‑to‑people exchanges.
