More than 30 international students gathered at Xiamen University (XMU) on Sept 5 for an orientation session marking the start of their studies in economics.
The economics department welcomed 36 new international master's and doctoral students for the fall 2026 semester. They come from more than 20 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America.
Among them, 23 are degree students in the Economics of Globalization and Chinese Economy (EGCE) program, including 17 master's and six doctoral students. The group also includes seven exchange students and six students in the Economics of Globalization and European Integration (EGEI) program.
Li Kai, an associate professor and program director, presented an overview of the programs' development, including faculty, the curriculum, and administrative support. He also outlined the degree structure, academic requirements, and credit arrangements.
Professor Niu Linlin, vice director of the Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics (WISE), said the economics discipline has nearly 100 faculty and research staff with overseas backgrounds. She encouraged students to make use of office hours and seek academic guidance from faculty members whose research interests align with theirs.
Nina Rodkina, a student representative, recounted her experience at XMU. Having completed her master's degree this year, she has now started her doctoral studies. Rodkina also offered useful tips for everyday life in China, such as how to shop and use food delivery apps.
