Professor Tian Zhongqun, a faculty member of Xiamen University's (XMU) College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, has been awarded the 2026 Electrochimica Acta Gold Medal by the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE). The award recognizes his transformative contributions to the field of electrochemistry.
The Electrochimica Acta Gold Medal was established in 1990 and is presented biennially to the individual judged to have made the most significant contribution to electrochemistry in recent years. Previous recipients include many former presidents of the ISE. Professor Tian is the first Chinese scientist to receive the honor.
The award citation highlights Professor Tian's pioneering work in electrochemical Raman spectroscopy, particularly his extension of the technique to platinum-group and iron-group metals, as well as his development of shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS). These innovations have enabled the study of materials previously inaccessible to conventional Raman techniques, providing unprecedented insights into the structure and dynamics of interfaces and interphases.
This latest recognition follows his receipt of the Raman Lifetime Award in 2024, underscoring his profound impact in both electrochemistry and Raman spectroscopy over a career spanning more than four decades.
In addition, XMU alumnus Professor Chen Aicheng of the University of Guelph received the 2026 Brian Conway Prize in Physical Electrochemistry for his outstanding contributions to physical electrochemistry and electrocatalysis.
