2026 sees Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) celebrating its 10th anniversary, which coincides with the 105th anniversary of Xiamen University (XMU). Over the past decade, XMUM has become a vibrant academic community, a transformation reflected in the professional journeys of its diverse alumni.
Zheng Zixin from China began his studies in the Department of Chinese Studies at XMUM in 2016. After earning his doctorate in Hong Kong, he returned to XMUM as a faculty member. Having witnessed the university's remarkable growth since its early days, Zheng describes XMUM as a home he was naturally drawn back to.
Wu Yongle, a Malaysian Chinese alumna from XMUM (Class of 2018), remembers how her teachers stepped in whenever she felt uncertain about her future with their dedicated guidance and support in securing recommendation letters, which paved the way for her graduate studies in China. Inspired by her academic journey and the mentorship she received, she eventually chose to launch her career in Shanghai.
Sameeha Siam, an undergraduate from Bangladesh at XMUM (Class of 2019), said that choosing XMUM was one of the best decisions of her life. Focusing her research on China's economic development, she was able to secure a position with China General Nuclear Corporation in Bangladesh through the university's international platform.
Gu Tianze, also an undergraduate from China at XMUM (Class of 2022), said that the opportunity to join the research vessel Tan Kah Kee and participate in experiments on marine environmental DNA inspired him to pursue further studies at the graduate level.
There are many stories yet to tell: some found life-changing opportunities at XMUM, some discovered companions to walk alongside them, some gradually found direction amid uncertainty, and some, even after setting sail far from home, light a lantern for their alma mater. In the decade ahead, may the spirit of XMU and XMUM continue to connect us all.
