Professor Chen Min of Xiamen University's (XMU) College of Ocean and Earth Sciences has been awarded the title of "Outstanding Individual in China's Polar Research" by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The recognition is among the nation's highest honors for contributions to polar research, granted only twice since China first launched its polar expeditions in 1984.
Chen has dedicated his career to marine isotope chemistry and polar science, participating in China's first Arctic expedition and its first joint Antarctic expedition to the Ross Sea. Under his leadership, more than 70 researchers from his team have taken part in 26 Antarctic and 10 Arctic expeditions.
In addition to his scientific achievements, Professor Chen is noted for his mentorship, integrating the challenges and discoveries of polar research into his teaching and inspiring students to pursue careers in marine and polar sciences.
XMU's College of Ocean and Earth Sciences is one of China's earliest institutions to engage in Antarctic expeditions. Through decades of continuous efforts by successive generations of XMU's marine scientists, polar research has become a distinctive feature of the university's research and training programs.
