On 7 December, Professor Wang Weilei from theCollege of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Xiamen University, together with domestic and international researchers, published on the latest progress in the field of the oceanic biological carbon pump. The related achievements were published in the leading international journalNature under the title of “Biological carbon pump estimate based on multidecadal hydrographic data”. The study utilizes a self-developed inversion procedure to derive the global distribution of the oceanic biological carbon pump and reveal the important role of advection and diffusion export (including mixed-layer-depth pump, subduction pump, and diffusion export of dissolved organic carbon, etc.) in the global biological carbon pump and the deep ocean carbon budget, which provides an important reference for the estimation of the ocean carbon sink under the background of global change.
