On the afternoon of September 22, Mr. and Mrs. John S. and Marilyn Long, founders of the Long Institute and presidents of the Long Family Foundation(LFF), paid a visit to the School of Economics of XMU and were warmly received by Lei Genqiang, secretary of the Party Committee of School of Economics, and Zhou Yinggang, vice dean of Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics (WISE). In the following meeting, Prof. Lei and Zhou briefed them on the general picture of the XMU economics, the achievements the school of Economics of XMU has made in international exchanges, and reviewed, in particular, the history of cooperation between XMU and Long Institute.
The tie between the school of Economics of XMU and the Long Institute can be traced back to 2013 when the scholar exchange program was established. Mr. Long was delighted to hear that XMU scholars have achieved notable research results in abroad through the platform of the Long Institute, expressing his wish for closer cooperation in the future. He also provided comprehensive information regarding the Long Institute, which is increasingly becoming a UCI compus-wide academic platform, pooling together the academic strength of the scholars from the School of Business, the School of Law,as well as the fields of social sciences and humanities. Given the good record of collaboration on both sides, the School of Economics of XMU and UCI are expected to further expand their exchanges in the future.
Long Institute, the US-China Institute of UCI, was founded in 2000 to help the public to gain a better understanding about the opportunities and challenges that may come with a rising China. Meanwhile, the Institute works to create a public platform by which Chinese and American scholars, industry leaders, policy makers and practitioners to get a clearer picture of these opportunities and challenges and exchange views and ideas. It mainly focuses on four key areas: (1) economic growth, trade and investment, (2)social development and justice, (3)philanthropy and wealth management, (4)risk and regulation.
