XMU Students Win Gold Medal in the 2019 iGEM

The 2019 International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) came to a successful end at Boston Hynes Convention Center on 5 November 2019. This year, 344 teams from all over the world participated and Xiamen University once again won the gold medal.

XMU-China team consists of around 20 undergraduates from various colleges, for example, the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Life Sciences, School of Informatics, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health, College of Energy, Art College, School of Mathematical Sciences, and College of the Environment & Ecology. Guided by Professor Fang Baishan from College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the team utilized synthetic biology to classify and simulate the complex group relationship. After a year of preparation and experiments, the team won the gold medal which marks the ninth gold medal obtained by XMU students in this competition.

Founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the iGEM Competition is the top international competition in the field of synthetic biology. The teams need to use standard Biobricks to build genetic circuits, establish an effective mathematical model, realize the delicate and complicated Artificial Biosystem prediction, control and measurement, as well as to complete the tasks by doing social research, field practice and poster presentations.
