“Qian Weichang Chinese Information Processing Award” is the nation’s highest honor in science and technology in the field of Chinese language information processing. Approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology and awarded biennially, the medal recognizes project teams or individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of Chinese language processing science and technology.

Actually, the platform developed by the team headed by Prof. Shi had its origin in the year of 2009 when the task was brought up at the 5th Cross- Strait Economic, Trade and Cultural Forum for both sides across the Straits to research and develop a smart system to switch between traditional and simplified Chinese texts. Since May, 2013, the project of the XMU team has received sustained support from the Ministry of Education for two phases on end.

After three years of committed efforts, the research team has successfully developed a multi-target intelligent two-way switching platform for traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese texts that boast complete functions and world-class accuracy. Geared to the needs of Hong Kong, Taiwan and to deal with ancient Chinese texts, this platform meets multiple switching targets, providing multi-level switching functions ranging from characters, phrases to terminologies and punctuations, making it possible to switch between the traditional and simplified Chinese with regard to the entire website. In addition, it has also released for public use the Taiwanese corpus, Taiwanese dictionary and the dictionary of variant Chinese characters. There is no doubt that the platform is a milestone achievement, the promotion and application of which will facilitate cross-strait communication and cultural exchanges and will go a long way toward the preservation and promotion of Chinese culture and the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.
