On the afternoon of Feb. 25, Prof. Zhang Yukui, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a researcher from Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, CAS, delivered a lecture in XMU entitled “The deep coverage of proteomics”. It is the No. 810 of “Nanqiang Academic Serial Lectures” as well as an academic lecture of the highest level in Xiamen University. The lecture was presided over by Prof. Wang Qiuquan, Director of the Institute of Analytical Science of XMU College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (CCCE). And the honorable medal “Nanqiang Academic Lecture” was conferred to Prof. Zhang Yukui by Prof. Zhao Yufen, Academician of CAS, and Prof. Jiang Yunbao, Dean of CCCE. The lecture hall of Lu Jiaxi Building was packed with audience comprised of teachers, M.S. and Ph.D candidates as well as undergraduates.

Despite the complexity and depth of the topic, the vigor and humor of Prof. Zhang Yukui drew waves of cheers and applause from the audience. During the lecture, Prof. Zhang focused on the challenges facing analytical sciences and life sciences at the forefront and introduced the latest development of proteomics research and explained from the following four aspects, i.e., membrane proteins samples preprocessing, integrated samples preprocessing system, deep coverage of proteomics, proteomics analytical platform application. Through ionic liquid, Prof. Zhang discovered an effective and high-sensitive proteins detection method. He largely improved the efficiency of proteins separation and high sensitivity detection by shortening the preprocessing time from 28 hours to 8 minutes. Besides, Prof. Zhang repeatedly stressed the importance of interdisciplinary partnership and multi-team cooperation in a concerted effort for mankind to advance in-depth studies and deep coverage of cellular proteomics which would increase the detection accuracy of disease marker proteins, decrease the rate of false positive detection, and achieve cancer forewarning and prevention at an earlier date. At the end of the lecture, Prof. Zhang patiently fielded the questions posed by the teachers and students present at the lecture.
