On March 8, President Zhu Chongshi of Xiamen University had a meeting with Prof. Vigor Yang, Vice Chairman of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), who paid a special visit to Xiamen from the US for the 21st International Spaceplane and Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Conference. Prof. Yang is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a professor of Georgia Institute of Technology and one of the world’s most renowned experts in the field of aerospace. Two years earlier on his first visit to Xiamen University, Prof. Yang had an insightful conversation with President Zhu and spoke highly of XMU’s vision and blueprint to develop its disciplines of Aeronautics and Astronautics, to which he promised to offer his support and help to the best of his ability. And the successful opening of the 21st AIAA International Spaceplane and Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Conference in Xiamen, which has made history for AIAA by holding a conference in China for the first time, would be unimaginable without the strong support from Prof. Yang. During his second visit to XMU this time, he offered his hearty congratulations on the rapid development of Aeronautics and Astronautics in XMU, saying that these achievements are a testament to XMU’s visionary initiative to stay at the forefront of science and technology of the world when building its fields of study and striving to be the best.
President Zhu extended a warm welcome to Prof. Yang and also expressed sincere gratitude for his consistent support to XMU’s Aeronautics and Astronautics. President Zhu gave a detailed introduction of the newly established School of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the plan for its future development. President Zhu said that Aeronautics and Astronautics is a strategic industry with staunch support from the Chinese government, hence it is a field of study where scientists can bring their talents into full play and where innovative talents are urgently needed and most sought-after. That being the case, it is essential for XMU to hold fast to the opportunities to fully advance this field of study. President Zhu also pointed out that the U.S. has the most advanced aerospace technology and he expressed his wish to enhance exchanges and cooperation between XMU and AIAA, hoping Prof. Yang could continuously play his pivotal role to bridge the two parties.
Prof. Vigor Yang expressed thanks to President Zhu for his cordial reception and he was delighted with President Zhu’s expectation to increase exchanges with AIAA, promising to render more support to enhance the partnership between XMU and AIAA in the days to come. At the same time, he put forward his own views on how to further develop the Aeronautics and Astronautics of Xiamen University and showed that he would remain committed to his support for XMU.
