On March 15, after having successfully completed all the items on the agenda, the “two sessions”, i.e., the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the National People's Congress (NPC) , drew to a close at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The students and teachers from Xiamen University have followed closely the entire progress of the “two sessions” through varied media since day one, and they were happy to see the CPC and the government’s resolution to deepen reform across the board and they were also thrilled to envision a better future of China and its great rejuvenation.
This year is a transitional year of 13th Five-Year Plan, and it’s also the crucial year for the target “building a well-off society in an all-around way” to be met and for the “Double Top-tier” project of China’s higher education to gain solid ground. Little wonder, then, that a vast number of XMUers have kept a close watch on the educational issues of the “two sessions” that concern the great interests of their own as well as their country, which have triggered heated discussions and generated an overflow of ideas and thoughts.
The discussions mainly revolved around the goals and objectives of the initiative to launch the “Double Top-tier” project in the educational sector. The name of the game is to ensure quality education, to deepen the reform of higher education, make the teaching evaluation system more rational and systematic. With regard to campus security, it is hoped to effectively prevent campus bullying and violence, especially in primary and middle schools, by enacting relevant laws and regulations. As for educational fairness, it is essential to render more educational support to the students in remote areas and alleviate poverty by means of education across the country.
