From March 17 to 19, the finals of the 8th Chinese Mathematics Competition for College Students, which was hosted by the Chinese Mathematical Society (CMS) and supported by the University of Science & Technology Beijing, was held at the campus of the latter.
It is reported that the competition has attracted 85,797 participants from 28 zones, but in the end merely 274 students made it to the finals. And among the shortlisted contenders, seven students come from Fujian zone, and five of them are from Xiamen University.
As key contestants from Fujian zone, these XMUers have garnered remarkable achievements: Song Yilun and Wu liang from the XMU School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS)placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the senior and junior groups for maths majors. Better yet, XMU has also made historic breakthrough in the contest for non-math majors with Lin Zhengyang from the School of Economics and Zhao Yunchao from the School of Aerospace Engineering both capturing the 1st prize and Wang Shijie from School of Economics pocketing the 2nd prize.
The Chinese Mathematics Competition for College Students is up to now the most influential one that boasts the highest level and the largest participation in the realm of mathematics in China. XMU has made it a tradition to promote the scientific spirit of alumnus Chen Jingrun, the late academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), kindle students’ interest in mathematics and discover talents. So far, XMU has organized some excellent students to join in the competition for seven years in a row and obtained brilliant results, which have fully demonstrated students’ solid mathematical grounding and the glamour of SMS.
