Chairman of IBM China gives lecture on big data and AI at XMU

On the afternoon of March 21, Chen Liming, chairman of IBM China, gave a lecture entitledBig Data and Artificial Intelligence: Reality and Prospectat Xiamen University as part of Nan Qiang Academic Lecture Series, which is also part of the activities to celebrate the5thanniversary of Xiamen Federation of Overseas Chinese Entrepreneurs and the96thanniversary of Xiamen University.

Chen said that mankind is now faced with numerous challenges in the times of big data. To meet the demand of the new era, the incorporation of artificial intelligence(AI) in the industrial development has become a new trend of social development in the future. As the only technological company that has existed for more than 100 years in the world, IBM champions commercial AI in collaboration with humans, ie. cognitive computing. As the third generation computing model following tabulating computing and programmable computing, cognitive computing stands out with its exceptional ability to perceive, reason, learn and interact with people. By citing his personal experiences in tourism and medical care, Chen analyzed IBM’s perspectives and views on AI and cognitive computing in the era of big data and shared multiple cases with regard to the transformation of IBM into a company of cloud platform for cognitive solutions. Chen noted that cognitive computing and AI would bring about sea changes in many industries, and many fields of study would be redefined.
