Two papers from the School of Economics selected into "Top Ten Chinese papers in 2015"

Recently, two papers from the School of Economics of Xiamen University have been selected as Top Ten Chinese papers in 2015 (TOP10) in The Year Book of World Economy 2016. One of them, entitledChina’s Production-Based and Consumption-Based Carbon Emissions and Their Determinants, was published in the first issue of 2015 Economic Research Journal, and this paper is jointly authored by Prof. Peng Shuijun, Dr. Zhang Wencheng (now postdoctorate at Nankai University) and Asso. Prof. Sun Chuanwang. The other one entitledTreaty ports, Railroad, and Industrialization in Modern Chinaby Prof. Liang Ruobing was published in the fourth issue of 2015 Economic Research Journal.

The paper co-authored by Prof. Peng Shuijun is part of the phased research achievements of the Prof. Peng-led project of the National Social Science Foundation of China (NSSF) called “Studies on Climate Change and International Trade”. Previously, this study won the second prize of Excellent Papers for the 19th Anzijie International Trade Research Award, the topmost national prize in international trade research. The study shows that there is a widespread cross-border geographical separation between production and consumption in the context of decentralization of production and trade liberalization; and that a country can meet domestic consumption and investment demands through imports of goods and services while leaving energy consumption and carbon emissions in producer and exporter countries. The conclusion of the research provides important policy implications for international carbon emission responsibility allocation, and domestic emission reduction and low carbon transformation.

The paper of Prof. Liang Ruobing investigates the impacts of China’s treaty ports and railroads on the early modern industrialization in the wake of the Opium War. Based on the latest data concerning the newly-built industrial enterprises in the late Qing Dynasty and the geographical terrain of the integrated geographic information system, the article constructs the municipal panel data of 1842-1916, exploring the roles of treaty ports and railroads in the industrialization by forming double and triple difference models, and making a further analysis of the impact approaches and action mechanism of them.
