On April 22, the Cross-Straits Interpretation Competition (Russian) and the first-ever Sino-Russian Invitational Collegiate Interpretation Competition kicked off at the Center of Science and Art of XMU. The event was jointly hosted by Xiamen University and the China Russian Language Education Association and organized by the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures of XMU(CFLC hereinafter). A total of 24 contestants were attracted from the prestigious universities from both side of the Straits and Russia including Peking University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Tamkang University, Fudan University, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Nanjing University and Shanghai International Studies University, etc.

The winners of the grand prizes, first, second, third prizes as well as honorable mentions finally came to the fore through the quarterfinals and finals. Notably, Bajramova Karina (Байрамова Карина) from Lomonosov Moscow State University came out on top in this contest. Prof. Huang Mei, Chair of the judging panel, commented on the performance of the contestants and noted that it is the first time ever for the high-caliber Russian language talents to gather under one roof from across the Straits and Russia and this splendid competition has brought out the best in every participant. What’s more, she offered three suggestions to the contestants and students in the audience: first, consistently hone the language skills; second, build mental toughness and do the translation job with more confidence; third, broaden the scope of knowledge to qualify as a professional interpreter.

After the competition, the rendition of a Russian folk song “Under a Violet Moon” by the Russian majors of CFLC presented such an interesting contrast with the performance of a Chinese classical dance “Lotus Blooming Everywhere” by Goluban Kseniya (Голубан Ксения) from Moscow, epitomizing the cultural collision and communication between China and Russia.

This invitational competition was organized on the basis of XMU’s cumulative wealth of experience of having played host to the past six Cross-Straits Interpretation Competitions since 2009. This kind of events has allowed more people to gain insights into interpretation as a career, worked up the enthusiasm of the young students towards this field of study. In the meantime, Xiamen University has gradually developed a distinctive and scientific contest mechanism, which has played a positive role in promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations as well as the academic exchanges and communication between two sides. Moreover, by employing the competition as a platform, both Russian and Chinese scholars in the field of interpretation have enhanced mutual understanding and friendship and facilitated cooperation in other areas.

On April 23, as part of the invitational completion, a series of activities such as the Round-table Conference on “Interpretation Quality Assessment Criteria”, young students networking activity were held as well.
