On November 4th, the opening ceremony of the 2016 XMU Sports Meeting was held at Xiang'an Campus. President Zhu Chongshi attended the grand event. Also present were Vice Presidents Yang Bin, Wu Daguang, Han Jiazhun and Zhan Xinli as well as the representatives of the teaching faculty and students from varied colleges and schools of Xiamen University.
At 8:30 a.m., the uplifting music of the Sportsmen March echoed in the stadium and kick-started the march-in ceremony. Athletes from 29 XMU colleges and schools as well as the prep classes for Chinese minority ethnic groups paraded into the stadium with their heads held high at an orderly pace, brimming with youth and vitality ,which are the typical traits of XMUers. Among them, the ethnic group students of the prep classes showcased their own unique culture with their fancy costumes and dances, meanwhile the cute smiling face masks designed by the Law School and the amusing reproduction of the scene of Newton being hit by an apple by the College of Physical Science and Technology all caught the spectators’ eyes and drew waves of applause and cheers.
Following the flag-raising ceremony, Vice President Wu Daguang delivered the opening speech. Mr. Wu expressed on behalf of XMU his gratitude to all athletes, judges and volunteers. Mr. Wu noted that XMU has long valued the importance of sports and regards the annual sports event as a good test to XMU's work and efforts on sports and an indispensable part of XMU campus culture.
Last year, XMU has hosted over 30 athletic events for different sports teams, and has won medals galore, which has injected a fresh impetus into students’ fervor for sports. Mr. Wu then wrapped up his speech by wishing all athletes great results and exhorting them to uphold fair play and sportsmanship in the games.
Upon President Zhu's announcement of “the 51st XMU Sports Meeting officially begins”, the event came to a climax with an adrenaline-pumping hand drum performance by 240 players and an eye-feasting aerobic dance by 135 students, which ignited the enthusiasm of everyone present and sparked an eruption of cheers from spectators.
