The Nature Index is a global indicator that is used to evaluate the output of high-quality research results by universities and research institutes from across the world based on the statistical analysis of the number of research papers published in 68 leading science journals. It tracks the affiliations of approximately 60,000 high-quality research articles, which amount to 20,000 universities and research institutes worldwide.

The selected 68 science journals cover four fields, namely chemistry, life sciences, earth and environment sciences, and physical sciences. According to the latest index, XMU is ranked 8th and 22nd among the universities at home and across the globe respectively in chemistry; 9th and 158th in life sciences; 12th and 114th in earth and environment sciences; and 21st and 180th in physics.
