On May 25, a delegation led by Hao Ping, deputy minister of Ministry of Education of China, visited Xiamen University Malaysia. At the end of the visit, Hao Ping was deeply impressed with the speed of construction of the campus and programs. He said that Xiamen University Malaysia had advanced education wisdom and a clear direction of development. He encouraged the university to explore the commonalities in internationalization of China’s education by experiments and innovation.

According to him, Xiamen University Malaysia was the pioneer of internationalization of China’s education, which would go down in the history of education in China. He said that the project was valued by the Party Central Committee and the State Council for its role in promotion of “One Belt, One Road” strategy. He hoped that Xiamen University Malaysia could serve as a bridge for the exchange of culture and education between China and countries of ASEAN.

One Belt, One Road (abbreviated OBOR) or theBelt and Road Initiativeis a development strategy and framework, proposed by Chinese paramount leader Xi Jinping that focuses on connectivity and cooperation among countries primarily between the People's Republic of China and the rest of Eurasia, which consists of two main components, the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) and oceangoing Maritime Silk Road (MSR). The strategy underlines China's push to take a bigger role in global affairs, and its need to export China's production capacity in areas of overproduction such as steel manufacturing. It was unveiled in September and October 2013 in announcements revealing the SREB and MSR, respectively. It was also promoted by Premier Li Keqiang during the State visit in Asia and Europe.
