Xiamen University Malaysia opens and 200 students become the pioneers of the new school
On Feb. 22, an opening ceremony of the beginning of the first semester was held in Xiamen University Malaysia, located in Salak Tinggi, Sepang, Selangor, Malaysia. The first 200 students and Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Ong Ka Ting, Malaysia Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China, Dr. Huang Huikang, Chinese ambassador to Malaysia, Zhu Chongshi, president of Xiamen University, Wu Daguang, Ye Shiman, vice presidents of Xiamen University, Wang Ruifang, president of Xiamen University Malaysia, etc witnessed the historic day.
Xiamen University Malaysia offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate programs. The diplomas conferred by Xiamen University are authorized and recognized by Chinese government and Malaysia government. The graduates will have opportunities to work or further study in both countries.
Xiamen University Malaysia began its enrollment in December 2015. According to their interests, the first 200 students are distributed to different programs, such as New Energy Science and Engineering, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Language, Journalism, Accounting, Finance, International Business. The school will have another two enrollments respectively in April and September. The number of students for 2016 is expected to be 700. The total number of students is expected to be 5,000 in 2022 and 10,000 in the long run. The prospective students are from Malaysia, China and other Asian countries. 30% professors are from Xiamen University and 70% are open for the recruitment of professors all over the world.
Xiamen University Malaysia is registered as a private university, but Xiamen University promise not to operate it for the purpose of profit. All the profit will be used for academic research and scholarship in the school.
With the support of Chinese and Malaysian people and the donations from all walks of life in both countries, Xiamen University has the confidence to build the branch campus into a top international university, contributing to the good and welfare of peoples in Malaysia, China and other Asian countries.
On 21 Jan 2013, Xiamen University accepted the suggestion by Malaysian government to build the branch campus in Malaysia. On 4 October, 2013, in the presence of Xi Jinping, President of China and Dato' Sri Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak,Prime Minister of Malaysia, the agreement was signed between China Development Bank, Malaysia Sunsuria Group, and Xiamen University. On 3 July 2014, the construction began. The campus, covering an area of 150 acres, is the first overseas branch school wholly owned by Xiamen University, one of the top universities in China. The total floor area is 470,000 ㎡ and the total investment is about MYR 1,300,000,000. So far 13 buildings have been constructed.
