Beutler Institute Inaugurated in Xiamen University
On 17th January 2015, Beutler Institute of Xiamen University was inaugurated. This institute, initiated by Bruce Beutler, the Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine,and the director of the Center for the Genetics of Host Defense at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, is located in XiangAn Campus of Xiamen University. Prof. Han Jiahuai, the vice president of Xiamen University, is the first dean of the institute.
The Beutler Institute aims at finding potential talents in life sciences. It is expected to be the cradle of future scientists, according to President Zhu Chongshi at the ceremony. Prof Bruce Beutler hopes that the institute can attract the best scientists of life sciences in the world, working together to cultivate the excellent talents promoting the research and innovation in life sciences.
The Beutler Institute, affiliated to Innovation Center for Cell Signaling Network which is composed of Xiamen University, Zhejiang University, University of Science and Technology of China, Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, SIBS, CAS, and Shanghai AppTe Co. Ltd, will select 30 excellent junior students annually from the center for training. The selected students, after studying major courses in English for one semester, will be sent to University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas or to the member universities of the Innovation Center for 6 to 12 month long research training, and then those who are qualified will be recommended, according to their respective choice, to University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas or to the member universities of the Innovation Center for further study.
