The preliminary round of the Sixth (2014) National College Students Mechanical Innovation and Design Competition of Fujian province and the Eighth Lota Cup Fujian Provincial College Students Mechanical Innovation Competition was held in XMU from April 25 to 27. The contest was hosted by Education Authority of Fujian Province, Fujian Provincial College Students Mechanical Innovation Competition Organizing Committee, Higher Education University and College Mechanical Principles and Teaching Design Research Committee of Fujian Province, sponsored by Lota Industrial Co,. Ltd and organized by Xiamen University. 300 teams comprised by 800 faculty and students from 17 universities and colleges in Fujian province attended the contest, making a record high in the number of participation teams and works. The competition judging panel completed the field defense of all the work and conducted strict screening after 3 days of contest. 14 teams from XMU stood out in competition, with 5 awarded the first prize, 6 the second prize and 3 an excellent award. The five first prize projects are qualified for national competition (22 in total in Fujian province). It was the best performance of XMU in Fujian Provincial College Students Mechanical Innovation Competition ever.

XMU and other contest participants attached great importance to the contest. XMU Academic Affairs Office, School of Physics and Mechanical & Electrical Engineering of XMU and the holding unit, Department of Mechanical & Electrical Engineering and the contest participants made well-organized preparations. Each team consisted of relevant university leaders, instructors and students.

Three distinctive features dominated the contest, namely “the most beautiful campus”, “the most abundant work” and “the largest number of participants”. The theme of the competition was “Imaginative and Dream Classroom” while the content fell on “the design and manufacture of equipment and tools in classroom”. The first prize work of XMU representative team covered multi-functional smart mechanical drawing desk, multi-functional electronic compasses, etc., showcasing practical and innovative study style of XMU students and winning shared applause from the judging panel.

The students’ outstanding performance owes a lot to the support of various departments of XMU, especially the comprehensive organization and implementation of Department of Mechanical & Electrical Engineering. Under the leadership of the department head and deputy head, the faculty, students, student volunteers and students of national defence carefully planned and organized the contest venue to ensure that quality service is available during the venue preparation, evaluation and demonstration, which supported this successful contest.
