Xiamen University (XMU) and the University of Alberta (U of A) have signed a student exchange agreement to expand academic cooperation between the two universities.
The agreement was signed on July 14 during a visit by a U of A delegation led by Verna Yiu, the university's provost and vice-president academic, and Huang Cen, senior special advisor on China, International Education, and Enrolment.
Shi Dalin, vice-president of XMU, said that the two universities share strengths in areas including energy, artificial intelligence, law, and public health, adding that the agreement marked the U of A's formal establishment as XMU's strategic partner in North America and would pave the way for broader cooperation on student exchanges, joint training programs, and research.
Yiu said that the agreement would provide a long-term platform for exchanges and that the university looked forward to expanding cooperation through short-term study programs and faculty exchanges.
Founded in 1908, the University of Alberta is a research university based in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, Canada. It is a member of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) and the World Energy University Network (WEUN). The university ranked 94th in the 2026 QS World University Rankings, as well as eighth globally and first in Canada in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
