The XMU research team headed by Prof. Bai Mindong won the 2nd prize of the 2016 State Technological Invention Award (STIA). Prof. Bai’s research project, i.e. ,“The novel technology and application of employing hydroxyl radicals in advanced oxidation processes(AOPs) to efficiently eliminate noxious marine organisms”, which is a pioneering technology aimed to quickly purify ships’ ballast water and effectively protect our ports against invasive species. How to process the hundred thousands of tons of ballast water has long been an international conundrum. After more than ten years of hard work, Bai’s team has developed the theory of strong-ionization discharge at the atmospheric pressure and invented the new technology of killing noxious organisms rapidly by efficiently using hydroxyl radicals in AOPs, which significantly reduced processing costs of ballast water to 0.03 yuan per ton, one- thirtieth of the costs of the regular technology. Now, her research team is standing at the forefront in this field and has become the focus of attention of her peers worldwide.

Additionally, it is reported that a total of 279 achievements have won the 2016 Science and Technology Awards, including the awards for China’s International Science and Technology Cooperation conferred on five foreign experts and one international organization.
