On the afternoon of January 1, 2017Prof. Rodney S. Ruoff, a renowned expert on graphene from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea, paid a visit to Xiamen University and gave a "Nanqiang Academic Lecture" as well as  a "2011-iChEM"Lecture at the lecture hall of Chemistry of Xiamen University. Prof. Zheng Nanfeng from the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering presided over the lecture, and Prof. Sun Shigang, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and also a professor at the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, awarded Prof. Ruoff a commemorative medal of “Nanqiang Academic Lecture”. This lecture titled “New Carbon Materials” has drawn almost 300 teachers and students from the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the School of Materials and the School of Physics & Mechanical & Electrical Engineering of Xiamen University.

During the one-and-a-half-hour lecture, Prof. Ruoff presented the latest research progress he and his research team have acheived on diamond films and graphene, highlighting the pioneering study of growing large-area high-quality graphene on the bare surfaces (111) of single crystal copper (copper-nickel alloy) foils, and suggesting the possibility of transforming the graphene films on metal foil into diamond films through the metal-carbon interaction. Prof. Ruoff envisioned the broad application prospects of graphene in energy, films, composite material, biomedicine, sensors, and electronic devices.

In his lecture, Prof. Ruoff also repeatedly stressed the importance of materials characterization and interdisciplinary cooperation and showed his expectation to conduct high-level international collaborative study with Xiamen University in the future by capitalizing on the research strength of XMU in the areas of Raman spectroscopy, interface chemistry, and energy materials.

Personal Profile:

Rodney s. Ruoff, who is an American citizen, is a world-renowned research expert on carbon materials and now is the director of the Multidimensional Carbon Materials Research Center at the Korean Basic Science Institute and a professor of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, Korea. Up to now, Prof. Ruoff has published 450 research papers in the fields of chemistry, physics, material science, mechanical engineering, and biomedical engineering. He was rated as one of the top 100 material scientists during 2000-2010 by Thomson Reuters, ranking 16th.
