There was a ceremony to formally welcome the Graphene Institute of Industrial Technology Research in the Songen building on May 5th.

Xiamen University, and two co-founders, both well-known grapheme research, Bluestone Global Technology Materials in Britain and Power Booster Technology Materials in Fujian. Bluestone Global is one of the first conducting research on application of grapheme. Power Booster ithe only company all over the world that develops key technology in the grapheme industry.

Ye Shiman, vice-president of Xiamen University, Lai Zhongping, CEO of Bluestone Global, and Sha Bingheng, chairman of Power Booster Materials, signed the cooperation agreement.  Present were Zhu chongshi, principal of Xiamen University, Huangqiang, deputy mayor of Xiamen, Chen qiuli, head of Fujian Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Shen canhuang, director of Xiamen Bureau of Science and Technology, top management team of Power Booster Materials, and vice-president of BGT Materials.

Hong jiexu, vice-president of Xiamen University, stated that graphene has broad application prospects and huge market potential. The Graphene Institute at XMU will mark the beginning of a new pattern, of management, research and cooperation, setting an example for industrialization of scientific and technological achievements.

Graphene, one of the most advanced materials in the world, is a kind of plat film composed of single layer carbon atom, two-dimensional material whose thickness equals to hundred thousandth of a human hair diameter. It is ultrathin, ultra-light, super strong, super conductive, and it has excellent thermal conductivity and translucency at room temperature. It may bring about significant renovation in touch screen, stored energy, electromechanical, biology and medicine.
According to the agreement, the Institute is about to introduce Professor Konstantin Novoselov, the 2010 Nobel Prize winner, who stands by the world's highest technical level, and the international first-class scientific research talents, creating a “Carbon Valley” here at XMU.

The Institute’s initial efforts will focus on flexible touch screens, a new generation of LED lighting devices, stored energy, graphene ink, and SimpleDB. During construction, the Institute will be housed in the building for scientific research of Pen-Tung Sah Institute of Micro-Nano Science and Technology. The Institute will finally located in Xiang'an campus of Xiamen University.
