Lately, the School of Management of Xiamen University (SMXMU) has officially received a letter from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), notifying that, after voting by all the members of the Accreditation Board of EQUIS (EFMD Quality Improvement System), EFMD made the final decision to award SMXMU five-year EQUIS accreditation. EQUIS accreditation is konwn to fall into three categories: failure to be accredited, three-year accreditation and five-year accreditation. Currently, among the over 160 worldwide business schools which have been accredited by EQUIS, merely about 50 have ever been granted the honor for a five-year period.

From July 11 to July 14 in 2016, an EQUIS peer review team, composed of such a formidable lineup of the deans from top-tier overseas business schools, EFMD accreditation experts and senior executives from transnational corporations, conducted an on-site re-accreditation assessment regarding SMXMU. Based on a previous self-assessment report made by SMXMU, the team carried out extensive and in-depth interviews with representatives from various related interest parties such as the leaders of SMXMU and XMU, faculty staff, students, alumni and business employers, and went on with an on-the-spot investigation of the teaching resources and equipment. After the strict and meticulous assessment, the EQUIS accreditation team positively verified SMXMU’s improvements during the past three years in ten aspects, including the formulation and implementation of strategic plans, school governance, student and teaching management, scientific research, globalization, business alumni networks, training programs for senior business executives, teaching resources and equipment.

Thanks to this re-accreditation by the EQUIS, SMXMU has gained a more objective picture of its own external environment and internal resources and a clearer recognition of its strengths and weakness with the help of the accreditation experts. Based on this point, SMXMU will be better positioned to clarify its development direction and lay out viable plans with regard to its teaching, scientific research, faculty building, internationalization, and the ties between alumni and businesses in a bid to maintain a sustainable development.
