By the end of 2015, Xiamen University has pumped 20.1 million RMB fund of Ministry of Education earmarked for construction and purchase into the technological upgrades of the Yixuan Hall cleanroom laboratory, in order to meet the demand for micro-nano laboratories of XMU in its bid to build and develop the Workshop on Industrial Technology of Graphene and the School of Electronic Science and Technology. On July 15, 2016, the new laboratory finished its construction and started its trial run, and then begain regular operation on Sep. 15.

While maintaining the high effectiveness of operation, Wang Jiaqin and Li Mingpo, engineers of XMU Pen-Tung Sah Institute of Micro-Nano Science and Technology (IMNST) , have devoted considerable amount of time and effort to their research and came up with an energy-efficient retrofit program, making it possible to finish upgrading the hardware and software of the system as well as lots of adjustments and tests by the end of 2016 at the cost of merely 15,000 RMB. After a two-month trial operation, the new system ran smoothly and saved electricity by 33.7%  under the conditions that all the lab environment parameters remained stable. The electricity reduction effect would be more evident during the hot and humid summer days. This technological upgrade is estimated to save over 300,000 RMB for Yixuan Hall each year , which is in sharp contrast to its annual electricity bill of a whopping over 1 million RMB before.

This energy-efficient technology is entirely a brainchild of the independent research and development of Xiamen University and could be promoted and implemented in the operation and management of the cleanroom laboratories of other colleges in XMU that are being built or planned to be built. Meanwhile, it would create greater values for XMU in the days to come if this technology could be introduced and applied in other research institutes or social service agencies in society.
