Recently, the Ministry of Science and Technology has announced the name list of the 3rd batch of the approved national makerspaces. The XMU Torch Geek Space (XMUTGS)successfully secured its place on the honor roll and has thus become the 1st national makerspace of XMU.

The XMU Torch Geek Space was founded in June 2015 by XMU and the Management Committee of Xiamen Torch Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone. Affirmed by Xiamen Science and Technology Bureau in the last July, it was selected into the 1st batch of makerspaces in Xiamen and the 1st metropolis-level makerspace for XMU. This June, based on XMUTGS, XMU-Intel-Torch Maker Center was jointly founded by XMU, Intel Corporation and Torch Development Zone and joined on board as a member of Intel Accelerator Makerspace. In August, XMUTGS acquired the approval of the Department of Science and Technology of Fujian Province, and has become the first provincial makerspace.

Since day 1, XMUTGS has trained a host of creative talents, and incubated a bunch of innovative products. As one of the major organizers, XMUTGS has co-organized the branch competition of the 2015 China-US Young Maker Competition in Xiamen and had its two competition entries, i.e., “Pet Selfie” and “Cellphone Robot”, awarded the 3rd place and 6th place respectively in the finals held last year in Beijing. In addition, it also received the invitation to attend the events of the 7th annual U.S.-China High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange and earned praises from Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. This June, its prize-winning work “Cellphone Robot” has entered mass production stage. In August of this year, XMUTGS continued its winning streak with its incubated work "Smart Atomizer Partner for Children" garnering the first prize in the 2016 China-US Young Maker Competition.
