From November 19 to 20, 2016, the 9th China-R Conference (Xiamen) and XMU Data Science & Quantitative Finance Forum were held jointly by the XMU School of Economics and the Capital of Statistics (COS), a professional website for the promotion and application of statistics. Combining the merits of statistics, econometrics, computer science and other disciplines, the conference focused its attention on the application of data science in various fields, especially in quantitative finance, risk management, Internet credit investigation, transportation, medicine and the Internet, which is of great significance to this Big Data Epoch when almost every decision hinges upon statistics.

The XMU School of Economics has always proactively participated in and promoted the construction and development of data science. In 2009, the first key laboratory of the Ministry of Education crossing liberal arts and sciences – the Key Laboratory of Econometrics was founded in Xiamen University. Its establishment embodies XMU’s strength in scientific research and teaching in relation to econometrics and data science. Apart from the recognition from the Ministry of Education and its counterparts across the country, the lab also attracts scholars galore from home and abroad to get on board to swell the ranks of the research staff at XMU. In 2010, the provincial-level key laboratory of econometrics of XMU, which is based on the convergence of literal arts and science, was approved as a project. XMU aimed to build the lab into the most advanced one in China and an influential, exceptional, inclusive one in the world. Hopefully, this forum would accelerate the construction and development of big data application in such areas as quantitative finance, data discovery, risk management, Internet credit investigation, transportation, medicine and the Internet and would go a long way towards the integration of industry, education and research.
